Admittedly, I'm really mainly posting this as I quite like the headline.
But it does really make you think, doesn't it? From Millers 05 (with good intentions but nowhere near enough finance to run a professional football club inherited from the late Mr Booth, that love him or loathe him, continued to write-off losses during the bad times) to a friendly game against respected Bundesliga opponents.
When Stewart took over and subsequently moved us out of Millmoor, if you'd have said to me when we were at the Don Valley, on minus seventeen points playing in front of an average of about 3,500 spectators that we'd have been where we are now, I'd have scoffed, and I'm usually fairly optimistic.
Despite Stewart's famous wallplan timetable of where we wanted to be, and talk of the Championship in three years, did anyone genuinely believe it would be so? That we'd be in the Championship, crowds over 10,000 most weeks, talks of imminent ground expansion, the players we have, the players we are being linked with etc.
And with all that, we're still hot favourites to be relegated from the division. A fine indictment of just what level of football we are competing at.
So what next? Well, obviously survival is, as Evans put it recently on Sky Sports, the "mimimum goal" but again if we achieve it in 2015-16 in a league that most consider a lot harder than last season, it must be considered another success. We're getting a bit used to success at the moment, aren't we? As Millers I assume we're all awaiting the perennial kick in the balls.
I believe if we could establish ourselves over the next two seasons, extend the ground and manage to attract another few thousand on the gate (even if it's partly done by giving away followings a bigger section of the ground) then we'll be on a fairly even footing with the lower budget teams in this division. As it stands, we're fighting an unfair fight, but fighting it well.
As an aside, I'm going to make more of an effort to post more regularly on here and would implore many like-minded users to do the same. Nothing against the MAD mods, but it's barely usable now given the daft ads and pop-ups, plus it's riddled with unwarranted egos and multi-users, with very little discussion about the football.
If we could get this site to be a hub for football chat (and it will naturally increase in traffic once the season begins) that would be brilliant. Like the old Rivals site, or MAD in its prime.
But bloody hell, Ex, change the background. It's a great shot, but when is the NYS ever that empty? Let's have one o
I've put the word out about the photo in another thread. A night shot from the NW corner looking down the West Stand with arms aloft and players celebrating in front would be my best opinion. I feel that kind of shot captures what New York is. But we'll see what we can get - so please get your phones working!
Its very easy to get dreamy eyed about Aldershot, Wednesdays in the cup, Leeds, Preston and Wembley etc. But we can't lose focus about what can be achieved, and how much work is still left in front of us. We're in a very defining period I feel right now. To properly build and to be taken seriously on and off the field, we absolutely need to stay in this league, no matter how un pretty that may be. That said, those clowns Millers05 nearly destroyed us, they had no business selling us out the way they did & although yes Coleman had no financiers behind him, he was fighting a losing battle from day one, especially a guy of his relative experience in business and local circles compared to big Tony.
4th bottom for me is the minimum goal, but you'd think from what we've brought in, we can be better than that - much better!
As for this site, I've said enough about MM, anybody who prefers that is no biggy, its called choice. I believe Banter is the better choice and so do many more, but it takes time. MM has 10yrs on us and are a company who care little for all the clubs they cater for other than plastering annoying, inappropriate adverts all over the place for paying chief execs. I am one man doing this for one club, a club and for the majority a clan I'm proud to be part of. This site has been paid for solely by me, I give a lot of free time to contributing - but the crux is - we aren't shackled by da man so to speak. This site is as much mine as it is every other member who contributes & that's how a successful forum should run shouldn't it?
I think the sites is growing. Ex and others have kept it afloat and others are slowly getting on board now.
It is truly amazing how TS has grown his vision. I'm in awe seeing him at work. The past is gone and to me it's dead and of no real use. We all agree that a couple of seasons more of this would be unreal and give us a chance of another 10 thereafter.
In the interest of fairness Exeter, I don't think it was Millers 05 that nearly destroyed us...It could be reasonably argued that they played their part in saving us.
At least some of them were and still are true supporters and they did their best to help the club.
They may have been a bit naive, they may have lacked the skills and financial clout to run a football club but unlike most of us they gave it their best shot.
They have received unfair criticism on the other forum, let's not repeat it on here.
They were not clowns, they were supporters who did not want our club to dissapear and gave it a go....failed?...maybe so but lets not kick them for that...I for one sat back and didn't even try and nobody blames me!
Ok perhaps the wrong wording. But to this day I still cannot fathom what on earth the bizarre reasoning was behind building that stand at a ground we no longer owned and had no way to see it to its conclusion. Secondary to that how said stand would bridge the 140k loss we were making every single month, mostly of which was to a horribly negotiated exit package & tenancy agreement. Tony saw that & it was the first thing he dealt with -and fair play to his principals, we wouldn't be where we are now if the Booths were still tickling our belly. In my opinion Kempo, naivety cause mistakes. It's more than mistakes that nearly put you out of business. I agree yes it took some balls to go at it, but in the end they couldn't stand up to Mr Burns and left a very horrible mess in their wake
Welcome Chester Green Miller to what is destined to become the prime site for Miller's fans. I have no axe to grind with those that keep posting on Millersmad that is their choice. All I can say is that I personally stopped posting on the site some time ago, because being someone of more mature years I was sick of the infantile behaviour of some posters. I have thanked Exeter before for starting up the Miller's Banter site and for all the hard work that he puts in to maintaining it. Thank you once again Exeter for giving a Towd Codger a friendly sensible site to post on once again. I am absolutely certain that the site will go on from strength to strength.
