Millers v's Mainz 05

Well what a really good workout against quality opposition.  What is pleasing about the new look Millers is how difficult we are to break down, we restricted a very good, very technical side to a few chances, OK they hit the post and Roos make a couple of decent saves but their goal came from a free kick that never was - you have to defend it of course but these are the things that drive fans mad.  At the other end we had a good shout for a penalty when a shot hit one of their players on the arm but the ref turns away.  But man what quality strike from Derbyshire - that will do him the power of good and Bowery made amends for his awful miss on Wednesday with an assured strike across the 'keeper into the far side.

Halford MoM for me closely followed by Richie Smallwood.  The central back pairing were very good again today and I think they will be the two that start against MK Dons.  The trialist from Peterborough (Joe Newell) put in a competent display without ever looking championship class if I'm honest.  Was a bit Skarz like in that he didn't show too much going forward and didn't once take on his man to whip a left foot cross in from the byline, rather cut back inside and played it simple, which is OK but you need that variation in your full backs.  McGuire put in a good shift up front but still looks a couple of weeks short of full match fitness.  White had a surprisingly quiet game after looking very good on Wednesday.  Bowery when he came on was a pest and his tanacity got him goal side of their defence on a couple of occasions.  It was his pass out left into Derbyhire that made the first goal and he thoroughly  deserved to get on the score sheet himself after Ladesma played a raking 50 yard ball over the top right into his path after a neat little back heal from Green on the left, just a brilliant move and wonderfully finished off.  Mainz didn't know what had hit them.

Bring on MK Dons!!

Seems I did Joe Newell a disservice, according to Evans in his post match interview it was him and not Ladesma that played the pass for Bowrey's goal - for that alone he deserves high praise - pure class.

Must have watched a different game. Halford is not a right back, got to be able to get forward. I'd play him at centre back in place of Collins. IF Buxton isn't fit play Richardson at right back. Thorpe played better than wednesday, hope we sign Newall played well at left
back.

Sure manager favours Bowery but JCH was only player to win the ball in the air up front. Clarke-Harris to start next sat' with Derbyshire up front. Maguire on the right, G. Ward & Smallwood central & White on the left. But I know JCH won't get picked, in fact there could be a big striker in.

Clarke Harris was poor, Bowery was excellent.  Did you not see that in the first ten minutes of coming on he had won the ball and powered through their back line on two occasions?  He made Mainz defenders think twice about playing out from the back.  He was the one who played the ball into Derbs for the first goal and he got himself a very good goal .... what more do you need from your forward players?  He was very good and JCH needs to bloody work harder for the team if he is to get a regular start.  Halford was very good as a stand in right back and a number of times he made some telling interventions in and around our box to alleviate the danger.
