Did anyone hear Steve on the radio last night talking to Sam Matterface & Shaun Derry?
For those who didn't, the presenter asked SE what we were aiming for next season, to which SE replied a top half finish.
Surely that is unachievable. I for one would be absolutely delighted with a 15th/16th sort of finish, but the same as last season - survival has to be the main aim.
SE also stated that if we did manage to be around the higher reaches of the division come January, then TS would go for it in the transfer window to give us the best chance of dare I say it... pushing towards the Premiership.
The facts are that our squad is a lot stronger than it was this time last season with quality in every position and a decent looking bench too. With a bit more 'rub of the green' we could have finished lower mid-table last season.
Admittedly the division looks a bit stronger this time round, there certainly wont be a Blackpool in the mix, but you look at Bolton, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Huddersfield, Reading - they've hardly pulled up any trees to strengthen and I think they will all struggle more than us.
The big factors will be; can Derbyshire continue the form from the second half of last season, can we keep Buxton fit, can we get more goals from midfield, will the new players gel? If we can get those things going our way we have every chance of a mid-table finish.
I normally refrain from gambling but I have put £50 on with Skybet for a top half finish at 9/2. The bookies seem to have taken no notice of some of our quality signings and promising recent performances. I'd get on before they wake up.
What I learned from the Leicester game. I'm happy with Keeper, midfield, got options out wide, up front JCH can give us that height, strength. New coach as got to work on the defence, Thorpe learn from getting caught out in the friendly's, Collins not 1st choice, sooner see Halford there with Rawson to come back. Right back Buxton or try Thorpe at right back. Left back do we wait for Mattock? Richardson did better than White there.
Get defence right there's a min' of 10pts to gain in august.
Can't see anything but a max of 60 points. It's going to be a very competitive league.
It's possible that a team like ours could come out of thd tightly packed middle section but our squad depth suggests this is unlikely. We are pleased and rightly so with what tony and steve have done but the squad is tiny.
