been told from tonight's taxi driver that they will not be operating on Saturday from 6pm until 6am in protest against RBC new legislation. Anyone else heard anything?

Views on taxi regulations sought after CSE scandal

If adopted the policy includes:

- Drivers having to complete a BTEC Level 2 certificate within 12 months, ensuring they understand a wide range of matters including customer care, disability awareness and adult and child safeguarding.

- Specific child sexual exploitation awareness training.

- A new tougher communication and knowledge test for drivers that will require a Level 3 in English and maths. Applicants who fail three times will be unable to take the test again for 12 months.

- All drivers will subscribe to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), enabling checks on the DBS to be carried out at any time.

- Operators receiving penalty points if they do not take responsibility for drivers and vehicles they employ.

- Applicants who have not been resident in the UK will face additional requirements to evidence their good character in the absence of UK criminal record checks.

- Would-be drivers with violence or sexual offences convictions will not be considered, but can apply if their conviction was ten years ago or more.

- Licence holders will have to appeal to the Magistrates Court rather than the Licensing Board if they wish to challenge a suspension or revocation of a licence.

- CCTV systems will be required in all vehicles within 12 months of the policy being adopted.

- Hackney Carriages will be white with a black bonnet and boot, but Private Hire cars will not be allowed to be white.

What exactly are they scared of?

Is it just the cost?

Or do they have something to hide?

They say that they are paying for the actions of the few. I say they are paying for their own inaction when they knew it was happening. I could be wrong but that's the impression I get.

If you don't like it get another job.

Some taxi drivers may go on strike again on Wednesday, 1st July 2015.
However, this time there may be a rolling blockade in and around Rotherham Town Centre when drivers take their taxis on to the roads.

total selfish reaction from the cabbies.

You carry public and potentially vulnerable people.

Everyone else with any such responsibility would have to meet similar criteria. For goodness sake, I pay for most of my training and certification and my own DBS.

Knowing a few cabbies and hearing their stories (whilst in a former incarnation) I suspect some may significant records or at best wouldnt want the attention these standards would being to their behaviour.

Others just dont want to be told what to do albeit in a reasonable fashion as thats one of the attractions of being a cabbie/self employed.

They might learn how to drive properly while driving around Rotherham under the speed limit for a change.

Who's going to monitor all the CCTV footage generated by the in cab activity?
More to the point how much will it cost to monitor?

The authorities and various agencies need to pursue the real criminals involved in CSE.
This action should have been taken many years ago.

The taxi drivers were implicated as being complicit to the CSE.

These measures are needed. It just means they can't fiddle either their taxes, dole or with kids any more.
