The lack of ability to change formation and tactics in games like last night at halftime is very worrying. When Derby were losing 3-1 to us, their manager was bold totally changed his formation and tactics, turned the game around. For me last night at halftime I would have turned the tactics, Richardson on play 3 at the back, letting Arnie be the sweeper style defender, both fullbacks to wing backs both are faster enough. Frecks on and play in front of Smallwood and Green. Then leaves you with 1 sub left to cover for injury or last 10 minutes push for jch type player to give new dimension up front. The fact that we don't seem to train our players to be able to change a structure of the team like that worries me. Add to that the fact Evans admits in the interview it was a flat game and they sensed it during the day and TRIED to lift the players. I thought last night was one of the worst performances at a key time in the season i have seen under Evans, we have been worse but it is the timing of a performance like that which concerns me more
One thing that should not have been missing at such an opportune time was discipline that comes from fresh legs, motivated hearts and focused minds.
I have always known we have little to nothing on the bench most of the time. The reality is we dont have 2 teams, or one and a half for that matter. Other teams do and that includes most near the bottom. This is why we struggle over the course of a season. We have little option but to play within out limited means. When its spot on we can perform but you cant do that as often due to fatigue and lack of resources.
Sure, you could have done what you suggest but do we have the quality to do it really. It could have made a difference but its doubtful. Arnie makes more mistakes than most and a sweeper role is not idea for him as he would be exposed as the last man. Richardson has no pace and fryers may not compete well in that technically advanced role. Im just highlighting the lack of quality even if they are the right tactics.
More worrying was the fact that Cardiff were one dimensional and not very good at it yet our boys were not up for it.
I thought the subs bench looked as though we could change things, Sammon a more physical presence, Frecks fresh legs and attacking edge to midfield, JCH speed to burn, Hammel trickery all could have made an impact but when we were 3-0 down its hard to make any headway.
I agree it was important to change the formation and stop the mindless Hump up forward that just resulted in giving the ball away, this was just playing into their hands. We needed good wing play and to get behind them but that didnt happen so being one dimensional it was easy for Cardiff to defend their lead.
Maybe if our defenders wer'nt made up from the Keystone Cops then we would have had a chance.
It has to be said that the defence is currently letting us down. Previously it was the forward line and we have had spells when midfield has been missing.
It's fair to say hamill and JCH bring something different to the party and so does frecks when fit and of course sammon is a physical presence.
Thing is we have to get them in the right positions. Ward, most would agree has deserved his place and do we go back to leaving Derbyshire out?
We can change things but look at the Millwall game. Second half we were a different team.
It's difficult when things don't click and we search for an answer in terms of changes, but often it's mental attitude that makes all the difference.
The question might be who doesn't have the ability to switch on at this crucial period.
