Anybody see the Brits last night? How ridiculous has our 'offence averse' culture got when ITV feels the need to censor a black man singing the word ******? I looked at the clock and it was gone 9pm so it was even after the watershed. Yet on C4 the other night on Meet the UKIPers they seemed to have no problem letting Rozanne Duncan dig herself a huge hole with her rant about Negro's.
As the old adage goes "you have the right to be offended, the rest of us have the right to not give a ****"
Yes it was Heman and while I accept that some are offended by it, I do believe that the black community has an absolute right to reclaim the word back from the racists. The only thing that censorship does is keep the offence and racist connotations alive. Using the word in context in films such as Django Unchained or in music like West's song is not only right it is essential in my view, otherwise we sweep history and prejudice under the carpet from where it continues to fester.
Of course a person subject to abuse can use the abusive word or language form as a means of expression. If this were not so then there could be no way to rise above the power structure that holds the prejudice in place. That's he whole point of empowerment. It's such a basic right and understanding of all discriminated groups.
For instance:
mental health advocacy attempts to redefine the language used to discriminate against it.
