Steve Evans is right, it is no good the Football League head of referees David Allinson calling up on a regular basis to apologise about bad refereeing decisions. The real question is what is the League going to do about the quality of officials at our level.
I accept that referees are only human and will make mistakes from time to time, but in general I believe that the standard of refereeing has deteriorated. Also why is it that if a referee is deemed not good enough for the Premier League he his demoted to the Football League. In most occupations if you are deemed not to be up to scratch, you are given further training and an opportunity to improve your performance if this fails you face dismissal. Why should referees be any different?
This goes along with S8's petition thread to 'Save Grass Roots Football'. Nobody being actively encouraged to take on referee's courses & with the incentives that it needs. That works its way up, fewer ref's so we have to accept the best of a mediocre bunch. Don't get me wrong it's admirable that they do. It is not their fault they are inadequately trained, poorly paid etc in context of what the pro game refs have to put up with. It's even worse now that so much financially rides on what they decide, or what they miss.
It's about time we had 2 referee's for each half of the game. In Ice Hockey there are 2 goal judges, 2 linos and a referee on such a small playing surface. The speed of the game of football is not far off it, and with the expanse of a full size pitch, it's about time some common sense was applied.
