Still say Billy Mercer, in my young days he was a goalkeeping giant. Later on though like most it was Alan Lee, and more recently Tavs (and I'm very choosy, not had too many fave players over the years). Me and my lad were gutted when he chose Wigan in the summer (still am)
Roy Ironside was my first favourite, but my most favourite ever has to be Rodney Fern. You always expected something to happen when he got the ball, and invariably it did!
That said, there have been any number of very effective players for the Millers over the years I've been watching, and each new season brings out a new favourite.
I couldn't single out just one player in the 50 years I've been watching because there have been many favourites in that time!
In the 60's and 70's there were Alan Hill, Barry Lyons, Les Chappel, Dave Watson, John Galley, Johnny Quinn, John Fantham and Alan Crawford, to name just a few!
Other faves have included, Dave Gwyther, Gerry Forrest, Richard Finney, Rod Fern, Bobby Williamson, Ronnie Moore, Ray Mountford, Jimmy Mullen, Martin Macintosh, Alan Lee, Des Hazel, Darren Garner, Joe McBride, Shaun Goodwin, Mick Gooding, Gerry Gow, etc etc!
And then there's the current lot, headed by Alex Revell who'll go down in the Miller's history for that Wembley goal, and in my opinion, the best Miller's goal I've ever seen!
In an era of Trevor Swift, John Quinn and Dave Watson my favourite player remains the enigma called Steve Downes. However, at the risk of annoying Hotshotbobby I have to confess there may be a ****erotic element here. Just don't tell my wife!
This is a tough question. Williamson, Towner, Forrest and Lee are all good shouts. However, I'm going to say a player who not only gave 100%, but really made our midfield have grit and steel in the first Ronnie era. We need a player like him again...Stewart Talbot.
Quinn was the classiest player that I have seen for Rotherham...Ian Butler the most exciting.....I wish we had a centre forward who could head a cross as Galley could and a centre back who could command like Watson.
Put four like those in our team and the Promised land would be beckoning.
I loved watching John Buckley, in full flow he managed to gain many a penalty with his trickery inside the box. Pity he wasnt as consistant but when he was on form he was unstopable
